How comfortable are you gambling $50k?

Hey! Prefer to listen instead of read the Newsletter? I got you! The Resilient Reiner Newsletter also comes as a podcast! 🎙️ Tune in to listen now!

$50,000. Yep. That was the total at the end of the year of all it cost to feed the pony and compete at 8 shows.

At least, that’s what she said.

(Cue jokes here. My husband’s inappropriate friend says this alllll the time, and now so do I. 🙈)

But seriously, as a coach, and competitor myself, I hear what folks are spending. It’s not necessarily shouted from the rooftops… but in a friend or client sharing.

And honestly, to reassure you that you aren’t alone, I’ve heard this more than once.

Actually, I’ve heard most things I share more than once. (So you really aren’t alone!)

Anyway, back to my story.

Paying full training, board, and showing cost $50,000 for a year of competition.

No, that didn’t include the purchase price of the horse.

Or the truck.

Or the trailer.

Or the custom saddle.

Yikes, I’m getting off track. My apologies.

My point is that’s a lot of money to most folks.

And it’s possible you’re closing this email real fast before your spouse sees it and questions your figures.

Or it’s possible you’re not in a full time training program, so your number is less. But truly, if you spent half that – if you spent $25,000 showing and competing in a year – does that feel like a “lot” to you?

Even if you spent $10,000 showing and competing in a year, does that feel like a lot to you?

Maybe you don't compete at all. But you keep your horse alive and that costs literally thousands and thousands of dollars! Just to keep your horse alive in the backyard, just to keep them in hay, farrier appointments and basic routine vet care is still thousands and thousands of dollars every single year. And that's before you've even done anything with them. 🤯

Now that I’ve got you all riled up and bothered, my main point is this: you can’t afford NOT to do any sort of mental preparation and training for yourself.

Maybe it’s with Resilient Reiner Academy focused on getting unshakably confident.

But my main point was just to hit ya in the face with some real numbers.

These horses we have and love are not free.

And if you’ve ever thought, “Mental training sounds great, but I barely have time to ride, let alone add something else to my plate,” you’re not alone.

Most riders I talk to juggle work, family, and riding schedules that leave them with just enough time to squeeze in the essentials. Adding mental training can feel like one more thing pulling at your already stretched schedule.

But here’s the truth: mental training isn’t about spending hours meditating in a quiet room. I mean, I won’t stop you if that’s your jam. But I’m about mental performance in the real world. It’s about making the most of the time you already have to rewire your mindset and unlock your potential. It’s about developing the skill to go from angry at “why can’t my kids just get along!” or anxious about riding in front of that Big Name Trainer and being able to shift to calm, focused energy to get it done and have a great ride. It’s about being able to cultivate your own unstoppable resilience and motivation to finally achieve those goals you say you care about.

Because here’s the kicker: mental training doesn’t take time—it saves it.

How many hours do you spend feeling stuck in your head, spiraling into self-doubt, or replaying mistakes instead of making progress? Imagine how much smoother your rides would be if you could silence the inner critic and ride with clarity and confidence.

The rides where you show up to the barn focused, confident, and resilient. Where a little bobble doesn’t begin to phase you and you just flow through the ride connected and loving it like you’re 12 again with a big ole grin on your face?!

That has everything to do with your mindset.

Think of how much faster your training progresses when you’re in that state!

And, let’s be honest, think of how much money you’ll save not throwing away show fees when you aren’t anywhere near being in the zone.

One of my clients had every reason to skip mental training. Between work, family, and riding, her days were jam-packed. But she also felt stuck—frustrated by the same mistakes showing up in her riding.

We had breakthroughs in our sessions together, then I had her start with some small, doable exercises before her rides. Within two weeks, she noticed a difference:

"I feel more grounded. Instead of overthinking, I’m riding with purpose. It’s incredible how such a small change has boosted my confidence."

What she discovered is something I tell all my riders: mental training isn’t about finding time—it’s about making your time work for you.

If you’re ready for the next step but aren’t sure what that means… Let me give a quick rundown of how you can work with me when you’re ready to take the next step!
